Upcoming Event: Wrongful Conviction Annual Summit

Past Wrongful Conviction Summits have brought together people from many facets of the wrongful conviction community and were considered a real high point for many. This year's theme is Operation Accountability.

The first Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) was established about four years ago in Wayne County, established by Prosecutor Kym Worthy and directed by Valerie Newman. Since then, around three dozen people have been exonerated. Compared to going through the Court of Appeals, it has worked at lightning speed and has given newfound hope to many. Since then, CIUs have been established in Washtenaw, Oakland, and Macomb Counties.

But as with many new endeavors, there have been growing pains. Sometimes there has developed mistrust due to misunderstandings of how they work and what is needed to ascertain the integrity of these previous convictions. This summit will help people understand the CIUs better but will also provide an opportunity for the community to give feedback to the CIUs in a constructive manner. We encourage you to be a part of this.

The venue has a limit of 250 so if you want to be sure to be able to get in, register. Information on how to register may be scanned from the QR code or simply by clicking on the poster below.
